The location of the canal from Lcwistown to the end of the longnarrows, in the county of Mifflin, presents more than ordinary ob-structions in its construction. The valley of the river is contract-ed between the ranges of the Black Log, Shade aid Jacksmountain. The precipitous and rocky shores, on both sidesof the river, render it impracticable to construct a canal on anelevated level, at a reasonable expense; as the^ v/orks are con-tinually forced mto the stream to save surplus excavations fromthe mountain sides.
