The Giants Tomb of Coddu Vecchiu – Detail of Esedera Top and Join to Left Side - (1600 – 1200 BC), Coddu Vecchiu, Arzachena, Sardinia, Italy.

The Giants Tomb of Coddu Vecchiu (1600 – 1200 BC) This is a collection of tombs dating back to the Nuragic Age (1600 – 1200 BC). A burial corridor is covered by granite stone slabs, which previously was under a heap of smaller stones and earth. It is thought that the semicircular area in front of the corridor (esedra) and larger stones was used for ceremonial rites in honour of the dead. The big central stele at the front is engraved with bands and at the base has a small opening to the corridor. The tomb at Coddu Vecchiu is the result of two periods of construction. The later addition was the esedera, large central stone (stele), was added to the older grave dating from 1800-1600 BC in the Nuragic age. It is an example of the megalithic tomb construction, ‘allee couverte’, which was used throughout Europe.
