John Morison, known as The Harris Blacksmith, was a preacher, evangelist and Gaelic hymn writer. He was born at Rodel in South Harris in 1790 and died at Leacklee (Leac a' Li on modern OS maps) on the island in 1852. He was married three times. He wrote his first hymn in 1821, began preaching and was ordained as a missionary in 1828. In 1843 he was ordained into the Free Church, following unrest within the Church of Scotland. He was also known for the help he provided in church building.
