GALLSTONE, DRAWING

A gallstone is a concretion formed in the gallbladder or bile duct. The stones are created by a chemical reaction between crystals (usually cholesterol and calcium). Certain conditions encourage calculus formation: diabetes, obesity, mulitpara women, oral contraceptives, etc. Calculi, in general, do not cause pain but can cause complications (vesicle inflammation). In this case, the stones are destroyed by noninvasive lithotripsy (also called noninvasive litholapaxy, this method crushes the stones by ultrasound, laser, or shock waves).
