A close-up of a scarlet macaw preening its colorful feathers
Scarlet macaws are large colorful parrots that live in Central and South America. They have red and yellow feathers with white patches on their faces, and green feathers on their wings. They live in rainforest habitats, and eat fruits, nuts, flowers, and nectar. The Central American scarlet macaw is found in Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize. The South American macaw is found in Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. All are declining in numbers due to habitat loss and being taken from the wild to be sold as pets.
