Tick-borne encephalitis, TEM
Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) revealed the presence of Russian spring-summer encephalitis (RSSE) virus virions in this tissue sample. As a tick-borne encephalitis, RSSE is an arbovirus, which means that it's transmitted through the bite of an infected Ixodes persulcatus tick. RSSE is a flavivirus, making it a member of the family, Flaviviridae. Each virion contains a genome composed of positive-sense single-stranded RNA ((+) ssRNA), and is icosahedral in shape. It is an enveloped virus, which means that its exterior proteinaceous capsid is secondarily encased in a membrane derived from the host cell membrane.
