Johannes Groningius (1669-1747), German legal scholar and author. Also known as Johann Groning, he published his works in Hamburg, but may have come originally from Groningen in the Netherlands. His works covered topics such as natural law, the law of naval military actions and European law. Titles by him include 'Bibliotheca Iuris Gentium Europae' (1703), 'Historia expeditionis Britannicae' (1701), and 'Navigatio libera' (1693). This artwork is from his 1701 work 'Bibliotheca universalis librorum iurdiciorum'.
