Percy, how-ever, held him manfully in check; and, after a seriesof desultory conflicts, Douglas retired into Scotland, forthe time being. When, in July 1346, Edward III. sailedfor France, he left Percy to keep the North againstmarauding Scots. In this wise was the baron deprivedof a part in the crowning victory of Cregy ; but it hasbeen truly said that the service which he rendered to hiscountry during the kings absence was fully as useful asboth Cregy and Poictiers together. For it was Percy whocommanded the English in the battle of Nevilles Cross—.
