ONCERNING the most importantart sale ever held in this country, wecannot do better than quote the firstportion of an admirable article whichappeared in The Times of February6th, 1882 : The Duke of Hamilton has deter-mined that the noble collection of pictures, statues,and splendid decorative furniture of this ancientducal mansion, with the exception of the familyportraits and articles possessing a purely familyinterest, shall be disposed of about the same timewith the library. . It is intended, we understand,that the sale, which will form one more of themany important dispersions of Art Treasureswhich have made the galleries of Messrs. Christiefamous in the annals of Art Sales for more than acentury, shall take place during the coming Palace dates back to times as early asthe old kings of Scotland, having got its name ofII. B. 2 HAMILTON PALACE. Palace long before the Lords of Hamilton of oldentimes became possessed of it as the appanageof their possessions at Hamilton, now grown intoa busy town of trade and manufacture. Enclosedwithin the domain is Moat Hill, an ancient seat ofjustice, with a Runic cross near it and an oldgateway. Cadzow Castle and Chatelherault areother interesting relics of the ancient Dukes ofChatelherault created by Henri II. of France in theHamilton family. The present mansion, however,retains nothing of the ancient palace, and is a stoneedifice of vast size built in the debased classic styleof the seventeenth century, with parts added at thewings, forming the Beckford library at one side, andthe new state rooms, built in 1838, on the ether, pre-senting a front by no means imposing, but ratherheavy and gloomy in appearance, with indifferentapproaches.
