According to Norse mythology, Ragnarok is the doom of the gods when the universe will be consumed by fire and a new golden age will follow, ruled by the surviving gods. In this 1905 illustration of events in Ragnarok, Thor attacks the Midgard serpent (this is the third time he has done so in Norse mythology). He kills the serpent with his hammer, Mjolnir, but then dies from the serpent's poison.
