Side of the sarcophagus of the Sosia family, from Ravenna, 3rd-4th century AD. It is interpreted as an ophthalmological examination of a woman by a doctor. In the background, above and to the side of both figures, the bell-shaped objects are cupping glasses, symbolising the practice of medicine. The inscription “MEMPHIâ€Â\x9D and “GLEGORIâ€Â\x9D is said to be written in Greek but with Latin letters. It might stand for the names of the figures, Memphis and Gregorio, another interpretation is that it refers to the initiation ceremony of the cult of Isis.
