Jamaica Street, Stokes Croft, Bristol, UK. 8th April 2022. A new sculpture has been erected in Bristol depicting a man holding a Monopoly set alongside his dog. The statue has appeared on Jamaica Street just off of Stokes Croft, near to Turbo Island. The work has been claimed by guerrilla artist Getting Up To Stuff and is located next to the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft (PRSC) building on Jamaica Street where efforts are ongoing to launch a community land trust scheme in a bid to tackle the increasing gentrification of the area. “Monopoly: the game you win when everything is unaffordable,” is the message the artist wrote on Instagram when the grey statue appeared on Tuesday. Also commenting on the statue on Instagram, PRSC said the new sculpture “seems to suit this spot perfectly, addressing homelessness in the face of property being used as investments, out of reach for a growing section of society”.
