Mr. Lorimers letters to Sir Ludovick Grant,when he went north to Scotland, report the satisfactory progress of hispupil in his studies, and his exemplary conduct. In what year James Grant first went to school has not been ascer-tained. The earliest reference to his education is in 1749, his eleventhyear, when Mr. Lorimer wrote to Sir Ludovick of his sons proficiency, andthe commencement of the holidays which the pupil and his tutor intended.
