Acetylcholine receptor-conotoxin complex. Molecular model showing alpha-conotoxin bound to a nicotinic acetlycholine receptor. This receptor, for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, controls electrical signalling between nerve and muscle cells. Alpha-conotoxin is a neurotoxin produced by some cone snails (Conus sp.). It binds to the receptor, preventing the binding of acetycholine and therefore inhibiting it signal transmission.
