The maroon leviathans of Landau

A South African Railway’s type 12A Class hauls a heavy coal train from Landau Colliery near Witbank in the Transvaal on Saturday 2 June 1973. A number of these engines were built in un-superheated form by the North British of Glasgow for working the collieries of the Witbank coalfield. In Britain such duties would be performed by small Saddle Tanks but in South Africa the heavy coal trains faced journeys of up to 20 miles to the connection with the main line system over trackbeds which undulated like corrugated iron.
