The new 18 foot wall, 20 inches thick, continuing from the west end ofthe old wall, on 26th Street, from Francisco Avenue to Sacramento Avenue andthen south for a distance equivalent to several blocks on Sacramento Avenue,was laid on a ^% foot deep concrete foundation, the space between pilastersis 19 feet, and the concrete coping, made at the institution, surmounts thetop of the wall, which is finished off with four guards towers and two gate-ways, all being of the most substantial build and pleasing architecture. The erection of this wall had become imperative in order to protect theinstitution farm, the quarry, crusher buildings, brick machine building, brickyard, garbage crematory and other buildings, all of which were outside of theold enclosure, and also to enable closer and easier supervision of the inmatesat work in this section. in order
