Dorinis, — To the memory of Publius Mancius Diogenes, freed-man of Publius Mancius ; (the monument was erected) in accord-ance with the terms of his will, under the direction of ManciaDoris, freedwoman of Publius Mancius. There is a curious ambiguity in this inscription ; we cannottell whether Doris, seemingly the wife of Diogenes, was manu-mitted by the Publius Mancius who gave him his freedom, orby Diogenes himself after he had gained his freedom andwas entitled to use the name Publius Mancius. Four buststones stood in front of the tomb and two at the rear, BURIAL PLACES 425 arranged as indicated on the plan; those in front are seen inour illustration. The tomb at the left of that just described (4; Fig. 237) is ofinterest as showing the result of an attempt to blend the archtype with that of the temple.
