Martyrdom of St Clement painted by Bernardo Fungai. Pope Clement I was the fourth pope and was also known as Clemens Romanus and, later, Saint Clement I. He was murdered by being tied to an anchor of a boat in the Black Sea and drowned. He was pontiff from AD88 to AD99.
