The most unusual type of active galaxy is the quasar (contraction of “quasi-stellar radio source”). Discovered in the 1960s, these objects are probably the size of our solar system and emit more energy than a galaxy composed of hundreds of billions of stars. Quasars are the most distant objects in the Universe that we can observe; their light was emitted billions of years ago.
