In all other areas the future of marine biodiversity is very dismal. Changes in coastal systems Introduction Coastal ecosystems are among the most productive ecosystems in the world. They include freshwater and brackish water wetlands, mangrove forests, estuaries, marshes, lagoons and salt ponds, rocky or muddy intertidal areas, beaches and dunes, coral reef systems, seagrass meadows, kelp forests, nearshore islands, semi-enclosed seas, and nearshore coastal waters of the continental shelves (see map in figure ). They are highly dynamic, and are now undergoing more rapid change than at any time in their history. The changes are due to dredging of waterways, infilling of wetlands, and construction of ports, resorts, and housing developments, and 118 Alterra-rapport 1718.
