He has taken a prominent part in thedebates in the Senate, especially on financialquestions and matters relating to the tariff. General Hawley is a vigorous campaign speak-er, and is always in demand when importantelections are pending. He rarely prepares hisspeeches in detail, but relies upon the inspirationof the moment, and in purely extemporaneouseffort has few superiors. He has strong andearnest convictions, and possesses the courage toavow them on all proper occasions. 1S39432 35. Hon. JOHN E. BUCK, CONGRESSMAN, FIRST DISTRICT. Hon. John R. Buck of Hartford, was born atGlastonbury, December 6,1836, and was educatedat Wilbraham Academy and Wesley an Univer-sity. After leaving Wesleyan Mr. Buck engagedin teaching for several years. He was Principalof Grammar or High Schools at Glastonbury,Bloomfield, South Manchester, and at Mood Haddam, spending the years 1858 and 1850at the latter place. He studied law in the officeof Judge Martin Wells and the late CongressmanStrong, with the latter of whom he afterwardsbecame associated in partnership, lie was ad-mitted to the bar in 1862, and has since been inpractice in Hartford. Mr. Buck is one of theleading lawyers at the Hartford bar, and liasbeen engaged as counsel in a large numberof important cases invol
