The stuffing-boxes of the STUFFING-BOXES AND GLANDS. 153 valve-spindles, too, are usually exceptionally deep, on account of theirliability to leak, and the trouble of packing them. The packing of thestuffing-boxes in the cylinder-covers of vertical engines is very liable to givetrouble with steam of high-pressure fi-om the want of moisture; the lubricantaffects only the top layers of packing, and keeps them soft, while the bottomones get hard and charred. Metallic packings (v. figs. 31 and 31a) arethe best for use with steam of high-pressure, and although some patent.
