. Notes and sketches from the wild coasts of Nipon; with chapters on cruising after pirates in Chinese waters. Natural history; Pirates. YESSO. 21 and in great profusion in both sexes. The men wear long flowing beards and moustaches. Tlieir entire body is invariably covered with hair, and very frequently to an extraordinary degree. The children are also hairy little things. Few reach the age of fifty; probably the hard, exposed life they lead is the chief cause of this low standard. The women appear to pass from girls into old women almost without any intermediate state; marrying very young, and their life afterwards being a very hard one, soon brings about premature old age. The women wear their great mass of hair flung back over their head and tied behind; ornamenta- tion is not neglected when they manage to get a few pieces of coloured glass, blue cloth, or beads. The glass is stuck into a band, and on great occasions worn round the head, while with the cloth they trim the collars and cuffs of their deer-skin robes. Great massive ear-rings.
