Bouncing bomb raid. Computer artwork showing a Lancaster bomber dropping a bouncing bomb to destroy a German dam during World War II. The bouncing bomb was invented by the British engineer Barnes Wallis (1887-1979) and was designed to bounce across the surface of water in order to avoid obstacles such as torpedo nets (lower centre). These bombs were used on 17th May 1943 by No. 617 Squadron of the Royal Air Force (the Dam Busters) during 'Operation Chastise' to breach the Mohne and Eder Dams in Germany.
