On thischarge Goddard was tried at the Old Bailey, andhonorably acquitted. Subsequently, a bill of in-dictment was preferred and found by the grand juryfor the county of Middlesex, against Simons, forwilful and corrupt perjury. Ashley, who waspresent at the examination of Goddard, when chargedwith the robbery before Justice Chamberlayne, andunderstanding, on Goddards acquittal, an indict-ment for perjury was issued against the jew, acci-dentally meeting Simons travelling on foot towardsIlford, from whence Ashley was comi
