BRITISH COLUMBIA, VANCOUVER ISLAND &C. Artist/engraver/cartographer: Cartography by Hudson Bay Company; MSS Parry, Franklin, Beechey, Graab etc.; engraved by J & C Walker. Provenance: "The Atlas of Modern Geography. Constructed under the superintendance of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge", London, Edward Stanford, Charing Cross [SDUK Atlas]. Type: Antique steel engraved map with original outline hand colouring. The map was published in few years after the Pig War (1859), after which the modern Canadaian/US border was determined through the Juan de Fuca Strait/ Strait of Georgia. Canadian territory includes the island of Saturna, and the border is printed as such on the map, however the printed border has been determinedly ignored by the colourist at this point from the printed and settled border, who has indicated it to pass west of Saturna island, which is itself uncoloured, indicating that the colourist took it to be US rather than Canadian territory. We can find no reference to Saturna ever having been in dispute between the United States and Canada/British North America
