The Old Stock Market (1653), the belfry of the Chamber of Commerce (1910-1921) and Opera (1923) in Lille (Nord), France
Lille's Old Stock Exchange, so named since it was built just opposite the new Chamber of Commerce (or New Stock Exchange) in the 1910s, is one of the city's most prestigious monuments. Located between the Grand'Place and the Place du Theatre, it bears witness to the intense economic activity that took place in Lille during the Grand Siècle. It was built in 1653 and was classified as a historical monument in 1921 and 1923. The quadrangular building is made up of 24 identical residences which enclose the inner courtyard, a place where booksellers, florists, chess players, strollers and tourists meet. The Lille Chamber of Commerce is a building built at the beginning of the 20th century to accommodate all the services of the Chamber of Commerce created in Lille in 1715. It is classified as a historical monument and today houses the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce. and industry in Greater Lille. Its 76 m high neo-Flemish style belfry is equipped with an automated carillon and is emblematic of the city of Lille. However, it should not be confused with the belfry of the Town Hall located a little further and in Art-deco style. It is often called the New Stock Exchange, as opposed to the Old Stock Exchange located just opposite.
