Aerosol. Aerosol spraying a globe of the Earth. Chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which has been used as a dispersant in aerosols have damaged a part of the Earth's atmosphere known as the ozone layer. Ozone, an oxygen compound, is vital to life on Earth as it absorbs much of the cancer-causing ultraviolet radiation that is present in sunlight. CFCs contain chlorine which is released when the CFC molecule breaks down in the upper atmosphere. The chlorine atom destroys ozone. Weather conditions particularly suited to this destructive process occur during the spring at the north and south poles, resulting in the formation of holes in the ozone layer.
