Martin Vahl was born in Bergen on Oc?tober He studied botany with Linnefrom 1769 to 1775, and was one of the pu:=pils dearest to his master. Then he travelledmuch abroad, from the north of Norway toTunis and on his return he was appointedlecturer and later on professor of botany atthe University of Copenhagen. He was, nodoubt, the most clever and diligent botanistin this country during that time, but unfor*tunately he died early (Decbr. 24., 1804),and his great work on the Danish and Nor*wegian
