Veliko Tarnovo was a Medieval capital of Bulgaria, The Assen brothers established a state capitol here after defeating the Byzantine forces in 1187. Veliko Tarnovo entered an era of prosperity and golden age, Many splendid monasteries and churches were built, arts and crafts and literature flourished. The geographical position of Veliko Tarnovo wrapped in the bends of Yantra River made it an ideal capital.
