These reinforcement trees have been so suppressed they will probably not pay the cost of MANAGEMENT OF PIEDMONT HARDWOODS In view of the steadily increasing acreage of southern hardwoods and the shortage of information about these species, new funds were made available by the Congress in 1954 for research in the management and utilization of hardwoods in the Piedmont. The management studies will be under the Athens-Macon Re- search Center in Georgia and the Piedmont Research Center at Union, South Carolina. The Athens-Macon Research Center is cooperating with the Forest Survey in preparation of a report on the status of the Piedmont hardwood resource. Personnel of the new hardwood management project at Athens are preparing a project analysis which will chart the course of the Station's future research in this field of work. Late in 1954 they also initiated studies of the growth rates and regeneration of different Piedmont hardwood species, in cooperation with the School of Forestry of the University of Georgia. - 16 -.
