Cranes and Straddles, Container Shipping Yard, Port of Elizabeth, Newark, New Jersey
A stevedore straddle is a heavy-duty machine used in ports and harbors for loading and unloading shipping containers from cargo ships. The straddle's design consists of a large frame supported by four wheels, with two long, hydraulic-powered legs that can be adjusted to straddle a container. The machine's operator can then lift the container off the ground and transport it to its destination within the port. The stevedore straddle is an incredibly powerful machine, capable of lifting containers weighing up to 40 tons. Its sheer size and weight make it an imposing presence on the docks, and its hydraulic movements are often accompanied by loud clanks and whirrs. Despite its massive size, the stevedore straddle is surprisingly agile, able to navigate tight spaces and turn on a dime. It is an essential tool for the efficient and safe movement of cargo within a port, helping to keep the global supply chain running smoothly.
