S. Thirty cases complicated by infection in or about the teeth havebeen referred to me2 by the Orthopedic Clinic. Pyorrhea alveolarisin all degrees from simple gingivitis to conditions in which pusflowed from the gum margin upon pressure was almost invariablyfound. In 77 percent of the cases the x-ray demonstrated apicalabscesses about one or more teeth. 2In this list I do not include cases referred to my predecessor at the 506 INTERSTATE MEDICAL JOURNAL The radiographic evidence of an apical abscess (see Fig. 1, 2, 3) is easily demonstrated by a more or less circular shadow about theapex of the tooth which represents a granuloma. This is practicallyalways in bone which has been absorbed during the process of de-velopment of the abscess. It is characteristic of these granulomatato have tough resistant sacks which can be easily removed en masseby curettement. Cultures from them invariably show the presenceof streptococcus viridans.
