She was conse-quently left in indigent circum-stances, with a large family, mostlygirls. With a view to better hercondition, she, in 1804, removed toMissouri, where it had been cus-tomary by the Spanish Govern-ment to give land to actual settlers; but upon herarrival at St. Louis she found the country ceded tothe United States, and the liberal policy toward set-tlers changed by the new ownership. After somesickness to herself and family, she finally removed toIllinois, and settled some three miles south of Water-loo, but the following year moved nearer the Missis-sippi bluffs.
