TO SEAL THE ENTRANCE TO SCAPA FLOW, A LONG CAUSEWAY WAS BUILT JOINING THE FOUR ISLANDS OF LAMB HOLM, GLIMPS HOLM, BURRAY AND SOUTH RONALDSWAY TO THE ORKNEY MAINLAND. THE CAUSEWAY NOW SERVES THE PEACE BY CARRYING SUPPLIES FROM KIRKWALL WITHIN AN HOUR, ALONG A 16 FOOT WIDE THOROUGHFARE. BEGUN IN 1940 THE CAUSEWAY WAS FINISHED IN 1945. - One of the causeways as it neared completion
