No. 101.—An all over Repeating Diaper Design, founded on theJapanese rose (Rosa rugosa). The ornamentation on the Stool or Coal-box, No. 98,was suggested by some Venetian furniture of the sixteenthcentury in South Kensington Museum. The actual makingof the article need not be costly, as its art value could bemade to depend upon the decoration. The idea was tomake a combination stool and coal-box—the utile withthe dulci. The colouring here could be in tones ofbrown and yellow, helped out with gilding. A studyof sixteenth century decorated furniture would here behelpful. The Panel of
