Diagnosis.—A medium-sized terrestrial salamander (largest Illinois specimen 167 mm. in total length), fig. 45, black or blue- black above, with white flecks; usually frosted with white or silvery white on lower sides and uniformly black or black with occa- sional light flecks below; 14 to 15 costal grooves; usually 1 to 4 costal folds between toe tips of adpressed limbs; 12 to 22 vomer- ine teeth; tail of adult usually slightly longer than snout-vent length, and often lighter ventrallv than belly.
