The Reredos decorated altar and floor tiling at Hereford Cethedral

Dating from the 7th century, Hereford Cathedral was rebuilt between 1079 and 1140 after Welsh and Irish soldiers burned it. Originally with Norman architecture, but by the end of the 13th century most of it had been changed when the central tower was rebuilt and many other parts added. Today is more or less what the cathedral looked like in 1539. The 12th century Norman columns and arches of the nave are decorated. There is a modern rood screen, a large lantern, and a reredos screen behind the altar. The Lady Chapel has lancet windows and is ornamented. The north transept was built in the Decorated Gothic and includes the shrine of St. Thomas of Hereford. The north window has beautiful 19th century stained glass. The tomb of the shrine of Bishop Cantilupe is built of Purbeck marble. The south transept may be the oldest part of the cathedral. The choir has many beautiful features - a reredos which represents Jesus on the cross and two pointed arches showing Christ with angels and the four evangelists. There is also a very strange, old Episcopal chair. The organ was built in 1892 by Henry Willis. Hereford Cathedral is one of the three cathedrals which house the Three Choirs Festival. In the tower there are 10 bells, often called the "Grand Old Lady". The Hereford Mappa Mundi is housed here with a copy of Magna Carta.
