When officers in riot gear surrounded a residential building at night, residents became infuriated and they came out of their buildings to heckle the officers away. Citizens developed serious animosity towards the police force as many accounts of police brutality and misconduct went unpunished. Pro-democracy protests broke out and escalated into urban conflicts when the Hong Kong government, under the rule of China, refused to withdraw a controversial extradition bill and condoned police brutality against initially peaceful protestors.
