A strapping or turning post, once used by horse drawn barges to assist navigation of sharp bends on the River Thames.

A strapping, or turning post on Clewer Point near Windsor, Berkshire, UK. Situated on the inside of a sharp bend in the river, the post would have been by bargees. Upon approaching the bend, the tow rope would be taken off the horse and wound a couple of times around the post. This would allow the barge to swing safely around the point under its own momentum in a pendulum like motion, rather than drifting across to the opposite bank under its own momentum.
