Americas. Coloured composite satellite image of the whole Earth centred on the Americas. Hurricane Linda (cloud swirl, upper left) is off the coast of Mexico. North is at top. Clouds appear white, oceans blue, vegetation green and mountainous areas orange. Around this hurricane winds reached almost 190 miles per hour, making this the strongest hurricane on record in the Eastern Pacific (centre left). Hurricanes form in tropical regions and are caused by large-scale evaporation and convection due to warm sea temperatures. Image taken on 11 September 1997 by the American GOES-8 satellite, and the AVHRR and SeaWiFS instruments.
