When its collections were presented to thecity of Milwaukee, in 1883, he was appointed one ofthe trustees of the Public , and was activein procuring the valuable Ward museum. Mr. Preus-ser was also treasurer of the German-English acad-emy, from the time of its founding in 1853, andalso of the National German - American teachersseminary until 1886, when on account of ill healthhe was compelled to resign both positions. became the president of the Mechanics in-surance company, in 1854, a position he has heldnow for thirty-eight years. He has had the satisfac-tion of seeing the company so , under his care-ful management, that it holds nearly two millionsof assets, with a cash .surplus of over one Preusser was married, in 1851, to Louise. Herman of Dietz, dukedom of Nassau, Germany, bywliom he had four children, two of whom are yet(1893) living. A daughter is Mrs. Schneider, thewife of an eminent oculist, resident in son is associated in business with him, and istreasurer of the company. Few if any of the earliersettlers of Jlilwaukee have met with greater successthan Mr. Preusser. From small beginnings therehas been, in his case, steady and uninternipted prog-ress in all the material interests in which he has en-gaged.
