The Ante-Chamber of the Hall of Arbitrations of the Palaceof Peace, at The Hague, two years and five months afterthe close of Act II. The stage is divided as in the firstand second Acts, the pi ncipal room being at the backof the stage on a higher level than the Ante-Chamber,and seen through a wide door in the centre of the the bench and extending its full width is an im-pressive symbolic oil painting. It is the allegoricalgroup of the great French painter, Albert Besnard,entitled Peace. A female figure is seen seated, lis-tening to the pleadings of two litigants. One of theseis arguing with vehemence, and the woman lifts ahand to stop him that she may hecr the other are two armed warriors, who, their differenceshaving been settled, ride off in opposite directions. Inthe foreground, and seemingly detached from the restof the composition, the symbolic figure of Peace risesas an apparition carrying a child in her arms. TheHall of Arbitrations is lighted
