HERNDON, Baxter D.—Born May 6, 1864, onthe place where he now lives, the subject ofthis sketch is one of the best known farmersand stock-raisers in Scotland Township. Mc-Donough County, 111. He is a son of MadisonHerndon, who was born near Richmond, Va.,and Margaret (Rexroat) Herndon, a native ofthe State of Kentucky. Her father, Peter Rex-roat, was also a Kentuckian. Madison Herndon. III.,where he was engaged in the general mercantilebusiness for six years. At the end of thatperiod he sold out and returned to the farm,which he has since conducted. This property,consisting of 190 acres, he purchased beforethe death of his parents. On September 1. 1SS4, Mr. Herndon was mar-ried to his first wife, who bore him two chil-dren: Charles and Bessie.
