There he performed his experiments in converting sound waves into electrical impulses for transmission down wires. In 1876, he patented the telephone and founded what has become the AT&T company. In later years he made many improvements to the telephone, worked with Langley and Curtis on flying machines, and founded the journal "Science." He died of complications arising from diabetes in 1922 at the age of 75. His coffin was constructed of Beinn Bhreagh pine by his laboratory staff, lined with the same red silk fabric used in his tetrahedral kite experiments.
