Antique 19th-century illustration of a portrait of Vasco da Gama, Portuguese explorer, commander of the first ships to sail directly from Europe to India. He was born in 1469 in Sines, Alentejo, Portugal and died on December 24, 1524 in Kochi, India. Engraving published in Bilder-Atlas zur Weltgeschichte nach Kunstwerken alter und neuer Zeit (Stuttgart, Verlag Paul Neff, 1882).
