A Japanese street actor is called Shishimai, and plies his trade about NewYear festival-time much as does a London Punch-and-Judy-Show^^ little ivory carving below is in reality a toy representing Shishimai, andis quite as capable of changing its mask as is the actor himself. A clever littlewheel inside the figure revolves to a flick of the finger so as to show successivelyfive entirely different masks. The illustrations show two of these.
