Zugspitze is located on the Austrian border beside the town of Grainau in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the federal-state of Bavaria. The border goes right through the mountain. The climb of the last metres from the peak area to touch the golden cross at the absolute summit is a very popular sport for athletic visitors.
