All but two species showed the pro- nounced territorial behaviour necessary for census- ing by the mapping method. The Mallard record was based on a nest located in the unburned area, while Brewer's Blackbirds {Euphagus cyanocephalus) were recorded in two loose colonies on and adjacent to the study plots. The breeding densities of the lat- ter species were estimated from the maximum num- ber of males observed at any time in the colonies. During the course of the census work, an additional 47 species were observed at the plots either as sum- mer residents nesting elsewhere or as spring migrants. Total breeding population densities were lower in the burned area than in the control area, especially in the first two years after the prescribed burn (Table 1). In the third year after the burn some recovery in total density was noted with pairs/ha present in the burned area compared to pairs/ha in the control area. Driver (1987) observed similar results at a fescue grassland at Last Mountain Lake, Saskatchewan, 115 km southeast of Kernen Prairie, though even less recovery in total densities was noted: only one-half of the pre-burn densities were observed three summers later. At a fescue grassland near Drumheller, Alberta, Owens and Myres (1973) reported that disturbance by mowing, grazing or cul- tiv
