Fig. 253 illustrates the modus operandi in the osteoplasticoperation of Pirogoff. The patient, a girl of six years, whose 334 THE RONTGEN RAYS skiagraph was taken three weeks after the operation, sustained acompound fracture of the foot, a heavy iron bar having fallen onit. Expectant treatment was resorted to for two weeks until thefoot became black. There was a small area of vital tissue at theheel which in connection with a fragment of the calcaneum couldbe utilized for the Pirogoff method. Thus the shortening of thefoot was practically overcome. The author favours inserting ascrew in order to secure approximation, especially under such cir-cumstances. In a severe injury of this kind a skiagraph should be taken atonce in order to ascertain the extent of the injury, Bone-splin-.
